One method involves drilling a series of holes in the relatively soft clay of the brick then chiseling the brick out in pieces.

But if you pull up old tiles it may be something you will have to contend with. Slip a pry bar under the putty knife and pull out the putty knife. Do not be afraid to cause damage to the brick or the surrounding bricks.

Do not remove the putty knife until the pry bar is firmly in place under the brick. Apply pressure to the pry bar until the brick pulls free from the floor. Once it is remove the knife and then wedge the pry bar up in order to remove the brick. Lift the brick and discard.
One tip would be to start at one corner and break up a brick then chip away the subsequent bricks in the direction of the empty space. However this method leaves the harder cementitious mortar in place around the brick which can be rather difficult to chisel away once the field brick is removed. Removing mortar from concrete slab floor can be tricky. That way rather than having to reduce the bricks to dust you should be able to pop them out whole.
