Remove Old Carpet Strips
Rust can bleed through the carpet creating stains on the surface.
Remove old carpet strips. Removing old carpeting may be necessary to save labor costs if you are having your carpet replaced. Remove any sections that are rotten delaminating or badly rusted. If you are pulling up carpet from stairs. Carpet removal takes 30 60 minutes while pad removal is another 30 45 minutes depending on the size of your room.
In most cases you should leave the old tack strip in place but there are a couple of exceptions. After pulling up your carpet you will most likely have tack strips left around the perimeter of the room. You may also need to remove your carpet if you have hardwood floors underneath that you would like to refinish. Carpet tack strips can usually remain in place but look for rust rot or other damage.
Begin at the top of the stairs. This post is chalked full of tips that ll make removing carpet so much easier for you. Pry up the metal nosing and remove it if present. Grab the cut end of carpet and pull it from the stairs using gloved hands.
If not cut the carpet near the top of the top stair riser.
